The New Kent Winery

New Kent County, Virginia
Size: 17,000 sf
Completed: Spring 2008

The New Kent Winery was envisioned as a thoroughly modern facility clothed in a building that reflects the values of this historic community. As such, its design and use of materials draw upon the traditions already present in the landscape. As the centerpiece and first major structure in the "New Kent Vineyards" development, the Winery set the tone for all later development.

The building forms borrow from traditional barn architecture, married with colonial retail elements and broad welcoming porches evocative of an 18th century tavern. Much of the design was developed to take advantage of available reclaimed materials. To complement these materials, all new materials were chosen to be consistent with the historic traditions of New Kent, including cypress shingles and standing seam copper roofing. The detail work includes lyptus flooring, heart pine paneling, custom built cabinetry, and shop fabricated true-divided light windows throughout.
