Ironbound Road Water Storage Facility

James City County, Virginia
Completed: Spring 2003

When a large Williamsburg area parcel was approved for the design of a new mixed-use development called “New Town,” county officials made the commitment to providing an appropriate entry corridor to the property. Along this corridor, a Water Storage Facility had been slated to provide the needs of the coming development.

The design by Hopke & Associates represents a return to the American tradition of taking pride in the aesthetic quality of our engineered structures. Winner of HRACRE’s Best Institutional Public Design Award in 2004, this facility consists of two 500,000 gallon tanks and a pump room.

The domed, pre-stressed concrete water storage vessels are complimented with reinforced brick pilasters, architectural cast stone trim, and metal roofing. The pump room joins the two tanks and features a brick arcade punctuated by glass block windows and mechanical louvers employed as architectural features.
