Mathews Memorial Library

Mathews, Virginia
Size: 9,000 sf
Completed: Spring 2002

This library was converted from a bank, built in 1931, along Main Street in Mathews, a small town in tidewater Virginia. The bank, a grand building with two-story ionic columns framing its main entrance, had been renovated a number of times, including its conversion to a library in 1946. This new renovation includes a restoration of the original bank lobby's coffered ceilings and circle-topped windows, for an appropriately monumental reading room. A children's wing was added to the rear of the building. To complement the grand Main Street entrance, the entrance to the children's wing is a lanai composed of a procession of simple Roman Doric columns, reduced in size to respond to the scale of its smaller users.
