Crim Dell Bridge at The College of William & Mary

The College of William & Mary
Williamsburg, Virginia
Completed: 1996

Prior to graduation ceremonies in 1996, it was determined that the iconic Crim Dell Bridge was unsafe for the annual procession from the Wren Courtyard to the Hall, and it was closed for immediate repairs. Since its construction in the 1960's, safety codes had been implemented which made an identical reconstruction an impossibility. Hopke & Associates was called upon to come up with a creative solution to make the bridge safe and compliant with current code, while retaining its original character.

A discrete but elegant handrail was designed, and presented to the president of the college in the form of a 3D computer animation. This computer model “walked” the visitor up to and across the bridge, enabling an accurate reflection of what the new bridge would look like. Presented on the site of the old bridge, the design won the President’s approval and the next graduating class processed across the new “old” Crim Dell Bridge.
